White Glass Christmas Ball Ornaments, 3.9 in Set of 6

Description

Six glass ball ornaments in white, each 3.9 inches across. That is a deliberate step up from the standard three-inch bauble, and the reason to buy a larger size is spacing: a handful of big ornaments placed with gaps between them makes a tree look considered, where the same volume of small ones makes it look busy.

White on a green tree

White is the most useful ornament colour on an artificial tree and the least often bought. Coloured baubles compete with the branches and with each other; white reads as a gap in the green, so it gives the eye somewhere to rest and makes everything near it look more deliberate. On a flocked or snow-dusted tree the effect is different again, closer to tone on tone, and it works best under warm white lights rather than multicolour.

The glass carries glitter and painted detail, so these are not flat matte spheres. The finish catches string lights at close range and gives the surface some depth.

Size and weight

At 3.9 inches each ball weighs about 0.09 lb. Individually that is nothing, but six of them on one side of a slim tree will pull the branch tips down. Hang larger baubles close to the trunk where the branch is stiff, not out at the tip, and the tree keeps its shape.

Six is a small set on purpose. Larger ornaments are meant to be used sparingly. A six or seven foot tree usually wants six to ten of them, with smaller sizes filling in around.

The obvious caveat

This is real glass. It breaks, and a 3.9 inch ball breaks into more pieces than a three-inch one does. Keep these on the upper half of the tree if you have pets or small children, keep the divided box they arrive in, and store them where nothing heavy will be stacked on top.
