Three inflatable nutcrackers with a ring toss target on each head, in red, green and gold. Each one is printed with a different score: 10 on the green, 20 on the gold, 30 on the red, so you can set them at different distances and make the higher scores genuinely harder. Six plastic rings come with them, two red, two yellow and two green, in two sizes: 11.5 inches for the easy version and 7.5 inches for the one that separates the adults from the children.

Setting it up

Each nutcracker inflates by mouth or with a small pump and stands 22 inches tall by 12 inches wide. The base has a water injection port, so you fill it with water to weight it. That is the detail that makes this work rather than being a nuisance: an unweighted inflatable target falls over on every near miss, and one with a water base does not, indoors or on grass.

How to play it

The simplest version is three throws each, add the scores, highest total wins. Move the targets further away to raise the difficulty, or switch everyone to the small rings, or make the 30 point nutcracker the only one that counts. It works for a room of children, for a mixed age family afternoon, and reasonably well as an office party game if you set it somewhere a stray ring cannot reach a monitor.

Practical notes

Deflated, the whole set packs into almost nothing, which is the main practical advantage over wooden party games. Empty the water out before storing it or you will find a damp set next December. It is printed PVC, so keep it off gravel and away from anything with a point. Supervise young children with the rings, as with any throwing game.

Honest assessment

This is an activity, not a decoration, and it will get used for one afternoon rather than sitting out all season. Judged as a decoration it is expensive; judged as the thing that gets eight people off their phones on Boxing Day, it earns its place. Buy it for a house that will have children in it.
