Description

A wooden model kit that builds into a cafe racer style motorcycle. The parts punch out of flat laser cut boards and lock together by friction, so there is no glue, no paint and no waiting. The finished model has a spoked front wheel, a knobbly rear tyre, a visible engine block, a fuel tank, twin exhausts, a rear rack and handlebars that turn.

168 pieces. The supplier gives a build time of two and a half to three hours and a recommended age of 14 and up. Assembled it is 24.5 centimetres long, which is 9.65 inches, 12.5 centimetres tall (4.92 inches) and 10.3 centimetres wide (4.05 inches) across the bars. That is a genuine desk object rather than a trinket, and it is the right size to sit on a bookshelf next to something else without looking lost.

How it builds

The engine and frame go together first and are the most satisfying part; the wheels and the small trim pieces at the end are where patience matters. Three hours is realistic for a first wooden kit if you work steadily. Nothing is time critical, so you can stop halfway and come back.

Who it is for

The 14 and up rating is about fiddliness rather than danger. A methodical eleven or twelve year old will manage it with an adult on hand; a younger child will not enjoy the small parts. For an adult it makes a good two evening project, and it is a reliable gift for someone who rides, because it is specific enough to feel chosen but generic enough not to get the model wrong.

Finish

The wood is left natural and unfinished. It takes a light wax or a thin oil well if you want to deepen the colour, and a light sand on the cut edges removes the faint scorch marks that laser cutting always leaves. None of that is required; it looks good straight out of the box.
