A 24 inch wreath is the size most front doors actually want. It fills the upper half of a standard door without crowding the letter plate or the knocker, and it is small enough to hang from an over-the-door hanger rather than needing a fixing into the frame. This one measures 23.6 inches, or 60 centimetres, across.

The flocking

The branch tips are snow flocked rather than plain green, and the berry clusters are flocked to match. Flocking does two things. It reads as snow from a distance, which is the obvious part, and it lightens the whole wreath so that it stands out against a dark door, which a plain green wreath does not. The trade is that flocking is a surface finish. It sheds a little in the first season and it does not like being rubbed, so hang it where it is not brushed past.

Lights and timer

Warm white LEDs are set through the foliage and run on batteries, so there is no cable to route and nothing to plug in. A six hour timer is built in: switch it on at the hour you want it lit and it repeats that window each day until you turn it off. Six hours covers a normal evening, which is the point, and it roughly doubles the battery life you would get from leaving it on continuously.

Detail

Pine cones and berry clusters are fixed through the wreath rather than concentrated at one point, so it looks finished from any angle and does not have an obvious front and back. That matters on a door that swings open, where the wreath is seen edge on as often as face on.

Material and safety

The foliage is a tough plastic on a flame retardant specification. As with any decoration, keep it away from open flame, heaters and candles regardless of the rating.

Where to put it

A front door, a window, a porch, a wall or a mantel all work. For outdoor use, a covered position will keep the flocking looking right for longer than a fully exposed one.
