The 2026 Christmas Decorating Guide: Light Up Your Home Inside and Out

There is a version of Christmas decorating that involves a ladder, a box of tangled lights, and an afternoon you will not get back. There is another version where you push a stake into the lawn, set two timers, and the house lights itself every evening until January. This guide is about the second one.

Start outside, and start with coverage

The instinct is to buy lights. The better first purchase is a projector, because the economics are not close. A string of lights takes hours to hang and covers one roofline. A projector covers an entire wall from a single point in the lawn.

Our dual-head snowflake projector throws four rotating snow patterns across up to 215 square feet from about 32 feet back, with both heads adjusting independently so you can light two walls or spread one wide. If you would rather have variety than snow specifically, the 48-pattern laser projector ships with 12 swappable theme cards covering Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving and more, which means one unit decorates the whole year instead of four weeks of it.

A note on placement: further back is almost always better. People stake a projector three feet from the wall, get a bright patch the size of a door, and conclude it was a poor product. Walk it out to 25 or 30 feet and the same unit covers the house.

Give the yard something at ground level

Projected light hits the walls. The lawn stays dark, and from a passing car the display reads as flat. That is what ground-level pieces fix. An inflatable 60cm ornament ball in waterproof PVC sits on the grass or hangs from a tree and gives the eye something with volume to land on. Group three rather than placing one. Decorations read as deliberate in odd numbers and as accidental on their own.

If you want something that runs from Halloween straight through to New Year, the red and green outdoor laser projector is the most versatile thing we stock. Red alone in October, green across shrubs for an eerie wash, both together from Thanksgiving onward.

Inside, buy things you can leave on

The test for indoor decoration is simple: can it be on in a room where nobody is sitting? A real candle fails that test, which is why so much indoor Christmas lighting ends up being used twice and then put away.

Flameless solves it. The Nordic candle lantern flickers like a wick with no wax and almost no power draw, and its restrained Scandinavian styling means it sits in a room that is already decorated rather than looking like a holiday item was dropped into it. For something with more narrative, the snow globe scene lantern puts a lit winter scene on a windowsill or an entry table, and it is safe around children, pets and curtains.

For horizontal runs, a lighted garland does what a string of lights cannot: it holds a shape. The 7.9 ft lighted birch garland carries 144 warm white LEDs on bendable twig vine, so it stays where you put it along a mantel, up a banister or around a doorframe, and its 6 hour timer means you set it once in early December and never think about it again.

Timers are the whole trick

This is the part people skip. A decoration with a built-in timer comes on at the same time every evening, including the evenings you are at work, out to dinner, or away for a weekend. A decoration without one gets switched on when you remember, which in practice means it is dark during exactly the hours the neighbors and the school run pass the house.

If a piece you want does not have a timer, put it on a WiFi smart plug and schedule it from your phone. It works with Alexa and Google Home, and it costs less than replacing the decoration with a timed version.

The tree, and what actually separates a good one

Artificial trees look identical in photographs and very different in a living room. The thing that separates them is the branch material. Cheap trees are entirely PVC: flat cut plastic strips that convince from ten feet and fail from three. Better trees use PE molded tips, cast from real branches with genuine needle shape, over a PVC interior that fills out the silhouette.

Our premium PE and PVC tree uses that mix and comes in 6, 7 and 9 ft with a folding metal stand. Two things worth knowing before buying any tree: measure your ceiling and subtract a foot for the topper, and check that the tree is sectional. A tree that is a fight to pack away in January is a tree you replace in three years.

One more layer: ambient light indoors

Decorating usually stops at the tree and the mantel, and the rest of the room stays lit by an overhead fixture that flattens everything. A run of RGB LED strip behind a TV, under a shelf or along a cabinet fixes that for very little money. Set it to a warm white or a deep red for December and the whole room reads as seasonal without another ornament being unpacked.

Order earlier than you think you need to

This matters more with us than with a big-box retailer. Our current fulfillment window is 1 to 3 business days of handling plus 5 to 9 business days in transit for the United States warehouse stock that makes up most of our catalog. Working backwards from Christmas, the safe last-order date is Monday December 7.

That is not a sales tactic, it is arithmetic. A projector that arrives on December 27 is worth nothing to you, and we would rather tell you the real date than take the order. If you are decorating this year, November is the comfortable window and the first week of December is the edge of it. A couple of items in our range ship from an overseas warehouse and take longer; those are flagged on their product pages, so order those earlier.

Where to start

If you are buying one thing, buy a projector. If you are buying two, add a timed garland for indoors. If you are furnishing a whole house, work outside to inside: coverage first, ground level second, warm indoor light third, tree last, because the tree is the thing you will still be shopping for in three years and the rest is what makes the house look finished this year.
