Description
One run long enough to finish the job
Most outdoor light projects fail on arithmetic. You measure the roofline, buy two boxes, and discover halfway along the second gable that you are forty feet short and the store has sold out. This is a single 328 foot run carrying 1000 LEDs at roughly six inch spacing, which is enough to outline the front of an average house, wrap two mature shrubs and still have slack for the porch rail.
What the eight modes are actually for
The button on the adapter cycles through combination, in waves, sequential, slow glow, chasing and flash, slow fade, twinkle and flash, and steady on. In practice most people use two of them. Steady on is what you want for a roofline, because movement at that scale reads as a fault rather than an effect. The slower fades suit a hedge or a wrapped trunk, where the eye has something to track. A built-in memory chip holds your last setting, so the string comes back the way you left it rather than resetting to the first mode every evening.
The timer is the feature you will use most
Hold the same button while the indicator is lit and the string switches to a six hours on, eighteen hours off cycle. It repeats daily from whenever you set it, so if you activate it at five in the afternoon the lights run until eleven and then come back at five the next day without being touched. That saves the nightly walk to the outdoor outlet, which is the reason most displays end up either running all night or not running at all.
Weather rating, read carefully
The light string itself is IP67 rated and built to sit through rain, snow and freezing temperatures. The power adapter is not waterproof. Plan the run so the adapter lands under an eave, inside a weatherproof outlet box, or in a garage with the cable fed out. This is the single most common way these strings fail, and it is entirely avoidable.
