Welcome to Brightwell Market

Halloween

Halloween decorating gets judged from the sidewalk, in the dark, by people who are not stopping to look closely. Brightwell Market stocks for that distance: lit inflatables, oversized spiders, black lighted trees, a laser projector and solar path lights, plus a few indoor pieces. Most of it runs on batteries or sun, so the outlets do not decide the layout.

The order-by date for Halloween delivery has passed.Wednesday, October 14 was the last day to order for delivery before Halloween. You are still welcome to order these items, but please expect them to arrive after October 31.

More about Halloween

Scale reads, detail does not

A Halloween display is mostly seen from a moving car or from across the street after dark, which means silhouette and size do more work than fine detail. One eight-foot lit grim reaper, or a 49-inch spider stretched across a 126-inch web, changes a whole house front. A dozen small props arranged on the steps changes nothing you can see from the road. If you are buying one thing, buy the biggest thing. Grouping helps too: the three black trees at 4, 5 and 6 feet read as a grove by the door, where any one of them alone would read as a single decoration.

Power decides where a piece can go

Work out the power before you work out the layout, because it is the constraint that actually bites. Inflatables need a grounded outdoor outlet and an outdoor-rated extension cord, so they end up near the house whether or not that is the best spot. Battery pieces go anywhere: the giant LED spider can sit on a porch roof, a hedge or above the front door with nothing trailing behind it. Solar items need real sun, not just daylight, so the eyeball path lights want 6 to 8 hours on an unshaded stretch of walk to run past ten hours after dark. Anything with a built-in timer, such as the small lighted trees, saves you walking the yard twice a day for six weeks.

Late October weather

Whatever goes outside has to survive a month of wind and rain, and most Halloween failures are wind failures. Our inflatables ship with stakes, tethers and sandbags, and all three are worth using even on a sheltered lawn: a piece that holds pressure overnight still tips if it is only pegged at the corners. Check the IP rating rather than the word waterproof. IP44, which covers the laser projector and the string lights, means splashing rain is fine and standing water is not. IP65 on the solar path lights is the tougher of the two. In a genuine storm, deflate the inflatables instead of trusting the tethers.

Indoors, and the part that packs away

Inside, the return on effort is high and the cost is low. Thirty-six hanging swirls finish a room in about ten minutes, the black lace mantel scarf gives a fireplace the whole theme without a single plastic prop, and the hanging ghosts come with remote-controlled lights on a timer. All of it folds flat or washes, which matters more than it sounds: the reason people rebuy this category every year is that last year's version was thrown out rather than stored.

Order by Wednesday October 14

We ship anywhere in the United States, free on orders of $50 or more and $4.99 flat below that. Handling takes 1 to 3 business days and transit takes 5 to 9 business days, so the honest worst case is about two and a half weeks door to door. Working back from Saturday October 31, that makes Wednesday October 14 the last safe day to order for Halloween night. Orders placed in the last week of October will not arrive in time, and we would rather say so than take the order. Lighting and yard pieces bought after that still have November in them, but the night itself will have passed.
