8 in Gold Star Christmas Tree Topper, Shatterproof

Description

A plain five pointed star, 8 in across, finished in gold glitter. It is the conventional tree topper shape, and it is made of moulded plastic rather than glass or thin mirrored acrylic, which is the point: a topper that comes off an 8 ft tree onto a tiled floor is a hazard if it is glass, and this one is not.

How it fits

The back of the star has a hollow cone moulded into it. You slide that cone down over the leading branch at the top of the tree, and the taper holds it. There is no wire, no clip and no screw. That makes it quick to fit and quick to take off, but it also means the fit depends entirely on how thick your tree’s top spire is. On a slim artificial spire it seats deeply and sits straight. On a thick or heavily branched top you may need to trim or bend a few tips to get the cone to drop far enough, and on a real tree with a soft leading shoot it can lean.

What is not lit

This star does not light up. There is no LED, no battery compartment and no cord. If you want a star that glows you need a different product. What this does instead is catch whatever light is already on the tree, which the glitter finish does well, particularly with warm white string lights behind it.

Finish, honestly

Glitter on moulded plastic sheds a little, especially on the first handling out of the box and again when it is packed away. Unbox it over a surface you can sweep. The finish is uniform gold on the front faces; the supplier does not state whether the back is finished to the same standard, and on toppers of this construction it usually is not, so plan on the star facing the room.

Size in context

Eight inches is a modest topper. On a 4 to 6 ft tree it reads as well proportioned. On a 7.5 ft or taller tree it will look small, and you would be better served by something in the 12 to 15 in range.

Stock on this one is thin, so it may sell out before the rest of the tree trim.
