Three flat figures, three different heights

This is a family group of three two-dimensional snowmen cut from iron rod and wrapped with light string, so each one is a flat outline rather than a solid body. The supplier publishes real measurements for all three: the tallest is 30.5 in high and 13.4 in wide, the middle one 27.2 by 12.6 in, and the small one 17.3 by 9.4 in. The three together weigh about 2.8 lb, and the group is designed to be arranged in a line or a loose cluster rather than stacked.

How a 2D figure reads from the street

Flat figures behave differently to solid ones. Seen straight on they read clearly as snowmen; seen from a sharp angle they narrow to a lit line. That is worth thinking about before you site them, because a front lawn is usually viewed from the road at an angle rather than square on. Set the three facing the direction people actually approach from, and stagger them in depth so the group does not collapse into a single row of lines when you walk past. The lighting is a steady warm yellow, 60 LEDs in total across three strings of 20, and it does not flash or fade.

Power: read this before you buy

These run on 5 V, 1 A USB input, not a standard wall plug. That has practical consequences. You will need a USB power source at the display, which in most yards means an outdoor-rated USB adapter in a weatherproof outlet cover, plus an extension cord to reach it. On the other hand the draw is tiny, so you can run all three from a single adapter, and a USB power bank is a workable option for a porch display or for a spot with no outlet at all. Plan this part of the install first; it is the step people get caught out by.

Staking and wind

Six ground stakes are supplied, two per figure, along with support rods. Use both stakes on each figure. A flat iron outline is light and has a wide face, which is exactly the shape that wind pushes over. In soft ground the stakes hold well. On a hard surface there is nothing to pin into, so these are lawn and flowerbed pieces rather than deck pieces unless you improvise a weighted base.

Weather and storage

The lighting is rated IP44, which means protected against splashing water from any direction. That covers rain and snow landing on the figures. It does not mean sealed against standing water, so do not site them where a downspout drains or where a puddle forms. They ship flat at about 4.1 lb in a carton roughly 15 by 11 by 3 in, assembled from heads, bodies, arms and rods, so they come apart again and store flat.

Honest notes

CJ does not publish a cord length, a bulb-life figure or a stake length. We have not invented them. Handling is 1 to 3 business days plus 5 to 9 in transit, so order by Monday December 7 to have these up for Christmas.
