Description

A two piece set of stake mounted Christmas trees, each 37.4 in tall, with 100 colour LEDs across the pair and a gold star at the top of each. A separate solar panel on its own spike feeds both trees through a single lead. It is intended for lining a path or flanking a doorway.

Charge and run time

The supplier’s own artwork quotes roughly six hours of daytime charging for about eight hours of light after dark. That is a fair summer figure and a poor guide to December. Between late November and January, most of the United States sees nine to ten hours of daylight, and a good deal of it is thin, low angle light or cloud. On a bright, clear, snow free day with the panel pointed at open southern sky you may get close to the quoted figure. On a grey week you will get a fraction of it.

The single most useful thing you can do is site the panel separately from the trees. It is on its own lead precisely so you can put the trees where they look right and the panel where the sun is. Clear snow off it after a fall, and angle the face toward the low winter sun rather than straight up.

Weather

The set is rated IP44, which covers rain and snow landing on it from any direction. It is not rated for immersion, so keep the stakes out of the spot where meltwater collects at the bottom of a slope or beside a downpipe.

Setting up

Each tree pushes onto its stake and plugs into the lead, and the whole thing goes into soft ground by hand. If the ground has already frozen, open a pilot hole with a screwdriver rather than leaning on the plastic spike. Eight lighting modes are selectable, and the steady setting is the one that will drain a weak charge fastest.

Worth knowing before you choose
