This is the quiet end of Halloween decorating. Eight feet of black lace, patterned with spiderwebs, spiders and bats, with the lower edge cut into a row of bat wings. Laid across a mantel it does the work of a dozen small props: the room shifts from ordinary to a little bit haunted, and it still looks like something an adult chose.

Not just for the fireplace

At 96 inches long and 18 inches wide there is enough fabric to run the length of most mantels with an overhang on both ends. It also works over a dining table as a runner, along a hutch or buffet, across an entry table, over an interior doorway or window, or pinned up flat as a backdrop for photos. Layering it over a colored cloth pushes the lace pattern forward and is worth trying if your mantel is dark wood.

Care and storage

The lace is soft, lightweight and resists creasing, so it comes out of the box ready to use and goes back in without needing to be pressed. Machine wash or hand wash on a gentle cycle and lay flat to dry. One note worth stating plainly: the fabric is not fireproof, so keep it clear of lit candles and do not use it on a fireplace while there is a fire going.
